Totals for 31 Dec 2010
Well I got in my last run of the year today. I got in 6.18 miles and I burned 1,238 treadmill calories. I wish I had a more accurate count but I figure I burn at least 1,000 calories when I put in the miles I do at the weight I am at. It was a pretty good run today but for some reason I was burning up in the gym. I am looking forward to this coming year and the potential it brings. I want to look back at 2011 and be proud of the things that I have accomplished. I hope to run my first marathon in 2011 which will make the year a success. Plus I hope to be around the 200 lbs mark by the end of this year. It is time to get focused and get to work. JUST RUN!!

Well I didn't run yesterday because I was under the weather but what a difference a day makes. Today's run felt really good and I got most of my energy back that I was lacking. Hopefully it continues for the rest of the week. I weighed in at 272.4 lbs today which it will be nice to be around 270 going into January. I hope to make January a good weight loss month and knock out my PT test on the 31st. I got in 6.11 miles and burned 1,218 treadmill calories. It is always nice to have energy left over after I finished running. I felt like I could have kept going which is a plus. I just need to keep on track through this final holiday weekend and hit the ground running in 2011. JUST RUN!!

Well I think that I have a bug or something because the energy during my runs is not there. But while I struggle through my run at least I am getting out there and running. That is the important thing. Go and Do!!! Maybe it's the 12 hour shifts, or waking up at 445AM for work, or maybe I'm not eating enough. OR maybe it is just an excuse and I need to suck it up and JUST RUN. I weighed in at 272.6 lbs this morning which is in the right direction. Tonight I got in 5.65 miles and burned 1,085 "treadmill" calories. Time to go to bed so I can do it all over again tomorrow. JUST RUN!!

Totals for 27 Dec 2010
Well it's the Monday after Christmas and I unfortunately took last week off to feed my face. And tonight's run showed me the fruits of my holiday labors. I made it through the run without throwing up so that is a bonus. I weighed in at 275.4 lbs so I didn't gain all of my weight back that I lost the week before last. I finally get to starting using my Runner's Day-by-Day Log 2011 Calendar I got this past fall. The days started today even though I look at these last few days of 2010 as a warm up for the year to come. It's time to get serious and get to work. Tonight I got in 5.63 miles and burned 1,083 "treadmill" calories. As much as it sucked I am glad I got the workout in and that is after working a 12+ hour shift. This is going to take some commitment on my part and it's time to get focused for 2011. GET SOME!!!

Totals for 18 Dec 2010
Well today was a free eating day and I took advantage. It seems when I have my "free" eating day I feel less motivated to exercise which was almost the case tonight. I almost didn't go and get my run in BUT my conscience was pricking at me so I got my lazy butt up and went. I am glad that I went tonight because I had my best run of the week. I got in 6.23 miles and I felt really good afterwards. It's days like these that I remember why I love to run. And people call me crazy but I love running on the treadmill just as much as I love to run outside. I guess all those miles I put on the treadmills in the Middle East did something to me. Tomorrow is my day off from running but I will get in a walk around the neighborhood so I get some type of workout in. Plus I have to mow the lawn and that's always a chore. I weighed in at 271.2 lbs this morning which was awesome. Can't wait to be in the 260's next week and who knows maybe in the 250's before the New Year. Until next time...

Well today was a better day for running. It took me 71 minutes to get 6 miles tonight but at least I got back up to 6 miles and I didn't feel like I was going to die. Well at least not totally going to die!! I weighed in at 272.8 lbs. this morning so we are still headed in the right direction. I know that this water weight loss will soon end and the REAL work will start. Just need to keep at it and keep it going. I forgot to add that starting on 15 December I set a personal goal to lose 20 lbs by 15 January. I know that is a pretty lofty goal but I am going to try and knock it out. JUST RUN!! Well this week is turning out like last week. Monday I went to PT in the morning and got in 3.25 miles. Tuesday I went to football practice and Wednesday I had a football game. Both days I didn't really get in all that much exercise cause I am playing center which sucks. NEWS FLASH!! I am not getting the exercise I need playing football. As a matter of fact it is screwing up my running because my legs hurt all the time along with bad knee pains and a strained left hamstring. So I think my football playing days are finished now. I need to get focused on my Personal Fit Test (PFT) on January 31st. No more screwing around and time to hit the treadmill/streets and lift some weights. Today was a real wake up for me. I was on the treadmill for 70 minutes and barely got in 5.58 miles. And I felt like I was going to die and I have to admit I was a little pukey feeling. The nice thing is I weighed in at 274.4 lbs this morning and that puts me down 4 lbs. this week. I got to keep this up, no excuses and no reason not to. Until next time...

Last Week.
Well I didn't get time to post workouts for last week because of the inspection that we had at work and putting in over time. It wasn't my typical workout week which seemed good since I was pretty sore all week. I decided to play on the intramural football team this year. Last Sunday was our first practice and it was a good time but I was pretty sore come Monday. Monday was a really rainy day so we didn't do our normal run outside. We ended up playing basketball for about an hour in the gym which was a good time. Wednesday we did cross training for PT in the morning which is always a good workout if you push yourself. Thursday I paced one of my troops during his PT test in the morning. I got in 3.25 miles. Friday was another football day and my legs are killing me from all the cutting, juking, etc. that goes along with playing football. It sure is different than running mile after mile. So it wasn't my typical workout week but at least I got in some exercise regardless. I will try to get in some more running now that we start playing games on Mondays and Wednesdays. Need to get serious about my workouts with my PT test coming up on 31 Jan. 2011. We are getting close now. I think I will start to add 50 push-ups/50 sit-ups when I get up in the morning and before I go to bed starting Monday (13 Dec). I think that will help come the end of January. Until next time...

Well another day in the books and I feel pretty good today. That's not to say that in the middle of my run I didn't want to quit and go home, but I didn't. I guess I am not even close to where I want to be cardio wise. I can't wait until I can run for the whole hour and feel like I want to keep going. I will get there eventually I just need to be patient. I am off to a good start. I got in 6.3 miles tonight. The next few days will be the challenging part because I am off and I need to motivate myself to get out the door and hit the street. So I decided I was going to try something a little different this week. I am going to track my weight every day and see if that helps me watch what I am eating. I guess we will see how it works out. I weighed in this morning at 277.8 lbs. If it helps out I might make this a daily habit. It makes more sense to weigh every day so you can see if you are gaining or losing weight. I ran 6.3 miles today and it was a pretty good run. I just need to keep it going through out the week. The gym will be closed Wednesday night @ 2200 hrs. through Thanksgiving @ 2200 hrs. So it looks like Thanksgiving morning I will have to get my mileage out on the road. It's starting out to be a good week, but it's up to me to keep it going. JUST RUN. Until next time...

Well I was a slacker last week and only got in 3 days of running which isn't good. Plus my eating habits fell off when I wasn't working out. I wonder if the two have something to do with each other. Hhmmm.... Well I am out to do better this week. I got in 9 totals miles today. Three miles at PT this morning and 6 miles tonight after work. I am pretty sure I burned over a thousand calories. I weighed in at 280.6 lbs this morning which is disappointing because I gained a half pound. I WILL do better this week, my health depends on it. Until next time...

Well another rough run in the books. At least I got out there and did the run even though I truly didn't want to do a long run. Well with my new job it doesn't seem that I have the time that I thought I would have. So with that said I think I have to give up my hour of lifting and just stick to my running. I would much rather run than lift if I had to choose between the two. I think I will always enjoy running much more than sitting in the gym lifting weights. I will start doing push-ups and sit-up in the morning when I wake up and before I go to bed. Plus I still have 3 days of PT that I do with the flight and we do strength training at each on of those sessions. Tonight I got in 6.3 miles and I burned over 1,000 calories. Well it was a late day at work today so no work out after work. I did get in 3 miles at PT this morning so at least it was something. I weighed in at 280 lbs. this morning so at least I lost 2.6 lbs this week. I hope to do better this week but as long as I'm losing weight that is the goal. Until next time...

Well today was my first day back to work and it seemed a little off because I've been on leave for a month, plus it is a new job. Monday I hope to get into the swing of things and really get going with my new job. I really didn't feel like lifting tonight so I stuck to running. I think if I get in 3 days a week of lifting that is good enough right now. I will mainly focus on my running with a mix of strength training. I need to get my base mileage back up and some weight off before I can really push myself. I got in 5.01 miles tonight. After tonight's workout I realize that this is going to be a long road. Happy Veteran's Day
Well it was a nice final day off to end my leave. Now it's back to the grind for a day and then I get the weekend off. That is pretty nice. I didn't work out on Wednesday (10 Nov 2o1o) because I was pretty sore but I did get in a pretty good workout tonight. Starter weeks are always rough but I need to stick with it and get through it. It will get easier the more that I work out, that much I do know. So with that said I got in 5 miles total today and I lifted weights for an hour. We went to the grocery store today before I went to the gym and bought a ton of fruits and vegetables to start FIT FOR LIFE. It should be interesting to see how that goes. It will overhaul how we have been eating as a family and should do us all a ton of good. It will be difficult to change my eating habits but it will be nice once it is accomplished. Totals 09 Nov 2010
Well day 2 is under my belt and I am kinda sore today. I have been taking it easy with the weight lifting so I can still walk around. I think with the running and the weight lifting, I will be sore regardless. I just need to work through it this week and hopefully by next week the soreness will start to go away. I got in 4.86 miles and I lifted for an hour. It's hard to start my new eating program right now because I am still on leave. It will take off next week when I get back to work and things get back to normal around here. Until next time...

282.6 lbs and disgusted
Well it seems that time again. I have reached that magical weight where it's time to lose it once again. I was going to post a before picture but I can't bring myself to do it. Maybe when I get to where I want to be then I will post the before/ after pics. I guess we will see. I think with this coming journey I will look for ways to make life changes so that this will be the very LAST time I will ever have to drop this weight. I think to myself on occasion that wouldn't it be nice to finally say, "I used to have a weight problem". I guess only time will tell. And once again it starts:

Weigh In & running totals for 27 Sep 2010
Tonight I weighed in at 271.5 lbs so at least I am not starting completely over. I got in 5.5 miles today and that took about everything I had in me to get that in. I am still pretty sore from playing volleyball on Saturday. We will see if I can stay on track this week and get into the 260's to start off October. And I hope to kick off losing 10 lbs. a month from here on out. I want to run the Okinawa Marathon in February and towards the middle of October should be 18 weeks out from that marathon. I will have to train hard because it is quite hilly for my first one. So we will see what happens. Regardless I have another PT test coming up in January so no time like the present to start training for that. Until next time...

Just a real quick post before I have to get ready to head to work. Yesterday I ran 6.28 miles and tonight I ran 6.31 miles. I am trying to be better about getting consistent with my running and blogging. This is the week to get it started once again. January is right around the corner along with another PT test. The time is now to start preparing and start losing this weight. JUST RUN!!

Running Totals for 10 Aug 10
Well I can't seem to get motivated to string together some workouts so I guess I will try again and see what happens. No mileage goals or anything of that sort just trying to get to the gym 6 days a week from here on out. Just get over there and do something. My main focus will be running but even if I get over there and just walk on the treadmill to get my heart rate up will be better than nothing. I just want to work on being consistent right now and once I have made working out a habit again then I will set some obtainable goals. I ran 6.37 miles today and I burned 1,342 treadmill calories. My starting weight is 274 lbs. I hope I can work on that number and start to get to where I need to be before I PT test again in either December before I deploy (if I deploy this time) or by January 2011 when my 6 month PT test comes due. The main thing is starting now so it is not a problem in four to five months. CONSISTENCY!! Until next time...

Well today was a pretty good day. It seemed to work out pretty good this morning lifting. I think I will stay with it and see how it goes. I think the harder days will be my days off because I will have to go when I wake up and not screw around the house and talk myself out of going. That will be the key. It's easy to go after work because I am already close to the gym and awake. We will see how it goes. My sets went up to two sets of 15 reps. I had to cut back on some of my weight to get through the exercises but it feels pretty good so far. Not a lot of soreness yet. I hope that since I am going at it pretty regular that the soreness will stay away. I rode to work and I went for 5.76 miles and I burned 699 calories. I also ran tonight for 6.26 miles and I burned 1,265 calories. So you could say it was a pretty good fitness day for me. I just need to make this a habit and life will be good. Until next time...

Well I have been out of it for the past couple of days. Friday I had another session at the Dentist and it took me a couple days to bounce back. Monday I just didn't feel like doing anything so I didn't. Today I decided to crank it back up though. I am trying something new this week and if it works out then I will keep doing it. After I get off in the morning I head over to the gym and lift, then I sleep, then at night when the family goes to bed I run. It seemed to have worked out pretty well today so I hope to keep it up from now on. We will see how it goes. Tonight I pushed myself pretty good. I did 30 minutes of Intervals on the treadmill, then I went out to the track and did over 2 miles of bleachers, then I went back in to the treadmill and cooled down for 1.5 miles. All in all I got in 6.49 miles and I burned 1,349 calories. I didn't ride my bike to work yesterday but I will ride it tonight. I hope to get things on track and stay there finally. I weighed in yesterday and I am down 4 lbs. to 265 lbs. So I hope to keep that number dropping. Until next time...

Totals for 1 Jul 2010
Well today was a pretty good day even though I am super sore, but that is supposed to be expected after the week I am putting my body through. I hope that it pays off on Monday when I weigh in. I know this sounds funny but I need to take in more calories than I currently am because I don't want my body to go into starvation mode and not lose any weight. I will have to work on that in the coming weeks. It is a learning process right now. Plus I am trying to be better about eating every 2-3 hours. Today I rode my bike 5.38 miles & I ran 6.09 miles. I burned a total of 1,838 calories today. Not too shabby even though that number is probably a little eschewed because of the treadmill calories. But regardless I burned a lot of calories today. I just need to keep it going. Fit test is the 14th of July. That is scary!! Until next time...

Well today was a rough one....period. After yesterday's interval training I just about wiped myself out tonight. Luckily I only had to get out and do cardio tonight. I really don't think that I could of hit the weights if I had to tonight. The positive thing I am taking away from tonight's workout is that I got out there and did something. It may not have been a lot of running but at least I got something in. My totals for today are as follows: I rode 5.38 miles & burned 570 calories. I jogged / walked 5.28 miles & burned 863 calories. I just didn't have a lot of energy tonight and it showed. I guess my fitness level can only go up from here. I need time to rebuild my endurance and strength and it isn't going to happen over night. Perseverance, that's my word for this week. I forgot to add that I weighed in on Monday and I am starting out at 269 lbs. I hope, I hope, I hope to see that number go down come this following Monday. Well today was a killer workout day. I am still not finished with my 200 push ups but then again I am about to head to work and in the 6 hours I have at work I only have to knock out 80 more. Easy peasy! I spent my workout time tonight at the gym because I had to get in a weights workout, one of three for the week. It went pretty good because it went quick. I also got in a 30 minute interval training run and then another 30 minute run on the treadmill run after my lifting session. My totals for today was 5.59 miles and I burned 1,026 calories during my run portion of the workout. My lifting session went as follows:

Well this Monday marks a new beginning for my fitness. Heather told me about one of her church friends (Liz Tennyson) is a personal trainer and she is working with people in the branch trying to pad her resume. So we gave her a call and met with her today and worked out a plan, or should I say I gave her my plan of what I want to accomplish and she will help me be accountable to what I want to do. I think that is what I need to keep on track is someone asking me why I am not doing what I am supposed/ want to be doing. So here we go. She has me doing 200 push ups a day, I am running one of Hal Higdon's modified training programs (modified because I took out a lot of longer runs because that is not what I am going for right now), and I am lifting 3 days a week. There is a runner's lifting program on Bodybuilding.com. So I am hoping that now that I have someone to keep me focused and accountable for what I am doing, I hope to keep on track and get to where I want to be. It is time to get serious and make a habit of this. Tonight I did my 200 push ups, I ran 5.26 miles, & burned 993 calories. Until next time...

I finally made Tech Sergeant!!
Well I finally got a good enough score this year to get promoted to Tech Sergeant. It only took me 6 tries but at least I got it done this time. I should put it on in October, so yay me!! I didn't get a chance to post last night so I thought I would take the chance and post this morning before I head off to bed. I got in a grueling run/walk last night in the horrid humidity that is plaguing Okinawa now. I think I will keep my outside runs to one day a week right now and spend the rest of my workouts at the gym on the treadmill in the A/C. I got in 5.3 miles & burned 1,076 calories. Not too shabby and I ran quite a bit more than last time. I just hope it doesn't take me forever to bounce back into running shape. I will keep my fingers crossed. Until next time...

Well today was hell day because it was my first day back to working out and boy did I feel it!!! It is amazing how bad my ride to and from work hurts my quads. It is killer! The hill over by my work coming home just about does me in and I have just enough energy to get back home in one piece. I am sure it will get better with time but I am sure looking forward to that day. My run "mostly walk" tonight took its toll on me also. The hills of Okinawa are trying to kill me!! The positive thing to take away from today was I got out there and did something. My totals are as follows: I biked 5.37 miles & I burned 693 calories. I ran/ walked 5.27 miles & I burned 889 calories. It's amazing that 30 minutes of strenuous bike riding burns almost as many calories as 70 minutes of run/walking. Obviously I have been away for quite awhile and it is total lack of motivation. Well I hope I solved that problem by getting rid of my car and buying a Cannondale F4 to ride back and forth to work. I needed something that is a change of pace from my norm because it just isn't working. Having the bike forces me to get in some sort of exercise on my work days. And I hope, hope, hope that on my days off I will get in some exercise because I have nothing but time. I have been in a major funk health wise. I have gained back all my weight once again from Afghanistan and it is quite depressing. There is nothing I can do about what has been done, I just need to look forward and get back on track GRADUALLY and things will get to normal fitness wise. I need to do this! Not only for myself, but for my family and my career. I have 4 months almost to the day until Mom arrives in October and I will be in the 230's or less by the time we go and pick her up from the airport. That is my mission and I aim to accomplish it. I got in a 5 mile bike ride today (it's a start. that's the distance from the house to work and back) and I also got in a 3.79 mile walk with Blu. I wanted to go farther but she laid down and refused to move and I would hate to carry her back home all that way. She is getting big!! I burned 568 calories on the walk. I have to wear my Heart Rate Monitor on a ride to work to find out how many calories I burn. Anyways I hope to get my head on straight and get back to being fitness minded. Until next time...

I was quite sore from the last couple of days of running so I didn't want to push it today so I took it off. I found out some good news today is that I don't have my PT test until the 25th of May so that gives me a whole week more to train. So I am happy about that. Well I am in the final countdown to my PT test on the 18th of May. Over the next 21 days I will be keeping track of my weight loss and I am going to give it an all out effort to lose as much as possible. Right now I am 268 lbs. and my pipe dream is to lose 20 lbs. It sounds impossible but I am going to try and knock it out of the park! I will track my weight every day along with my runs. Today I ran 6.49 miles and I burned approx. 1,354 treadmill calories. I need to keep this going and see where it takes me. Maybe this is the motivation I have been looking for. JUST RUN. Until next time...

Cold rain translates into miserable run so I decided that indoors was the way to go. Got in a decent run tonight even though the treadmill helps me not cheat on my pace. So needless to say I was a little winded during my run but I got through it. I got in 6.29 miles and burned approx. 1,282 treadmill calories. My weight today is 270 lbs. So that means I am up 10 lbs from the first of the year. I am headed in the wrong direction. I am going to have to do something about that. Fitness test is coming up on the 18th of May but I am going to see if they can push it back to the end of the month because of my root canal around that same time. We will see. Until next time...

Well two days in a row now and the humidity is killer! But I got out there and did what I needed to do. Well I am back at it this week after a hiatus but I am pressing forward and not dwelling on what I didn't do. Instead I am looking forward at what I need to do. I can't do anything about the past but I can change things for my future. So here we go again. Tonight was very humid and it felt like I was running in a sauna which felt pretty good. I real quick post with my totals for the last couple of days. Yesterday was my recovery day and I walked on the treadmill for an hour and got in 4 miles & burned 661 calories. Today it is so windy and I didn't have it in me to go run this morning. So that meant getting outside in the wind and getting in my workout which just about killed me. I got in 5.78 miles and I burned 1,027. At least I got the workout in. Until next time...

Totals for 10 Apr 10
Well day 2 of running on the treadmill and today was a killer workout. Mostly because I didn't want to go run because I didn't get that much sleep last night and we ate some crappy food over at the bowling alley so it wasn't sitting right in my stomach. But I went anyways and I am always glad that I did. Tomorrow will be my rest day and by that I mean go over to the gym and walk on the treadmill for an hour. I plan on doing something every day from here on out or at least I feel good about my progress again. Today I went for 6.67 miles and burned 1,411 calories. I weighed in yesterday at the gym and I was 268.5 lbs. I don't know if that scale is accurate but it will be the scale I will use to weigh myself each week. I hope to re-find my determination or the treadmill sickness once again. By treadmill sickness I mean where I start to go into withdrawals if I skip a day of running on the treadmill. I am definitely not there right now but give it a month or so and it will come. Until next time...

Well the first day on the treadmill kicked my butt. You would think that running outside would be a lot tougher that running indoors but that isn't the case here. Maybe because I feel like I push myself a lot more on the treadmill. It was a good run today. I hope to keep it going and get back to where I was not too long ago. Rock Bottom Again!
Well it's official, I have lost all the endurance I built up while I was in Afghanistan. We are starting at rock bottom once again for my cardio endurance and weight. I am trading in the street running for the treadmill running until I can get a good base under my belt once again. It will be easier to get some weight off and not kill my legs in the process. After a couple of weeks of treadmill running, I will incorporate one long day of street running along with one day of speed work on the treadmill and we will go up to that point. I need to figure this out. Today I got in 4.88 miles and burned 655 calories. This was an eye opening experience for me today because I couldn't run the hills today so most of my cardio was walking. That sucks but it is my own fault and I have no one to blame but myself. I am the only one who can change me and I am doing a piss poor job so far this year. Time for a new way of thinking and time to make things more simplistic and not think about it so much. I just need to commit myself to being healthier and getting to where I want to be. Well I hope this is a start to a good month. I really didn't feel like getting out and running tonight but I didn't have an excuse not too so I went and it sucked!! But at least I got out there and got a work out in. I need to kick it in the butt this month for sure because next month is the test month once again and it will be close....once again. I should be fine if I can get in some good running this month and next. I hope that I can test on the 31st of May so it will give me a whole extra month to get down to where I want to be. OK, enough rambling, tonight I got in 5.71 miles and I burned 876 calories. I had to do a lot of walking on the hills because my legs felt dead tonight. Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad!!
Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad, I hope that this is another great year!! You both deserve it. We love and miss you both. Well I finished off the month with three good runs, or three runs none the less. I hope that April will turn out to be my best month yet. I guess we will see. I have my PT test coming up in May so now is about the time that I start to get nervous about it. Today I ran 5.81 miles and burned 863 calories. For March I got in 84.74 miles and I burned 9,986 calories. I am at 235.08 miles for the year so I am 65 miles behind my goal for the year. I hope to make up some of that ground in April. JUST RUN!! Just a quickie post to say I finally got some running in the past couple of days. The exercise is finally over which is always a good thing now hopefully we can get back to some sort of normalcy. It's sad that "regular" is 12 hour shifts with no other expectations. Anyways, yesterday I ran 6 miles & burned 825 calories and today I ran 5.75 miles and burned 880 calories. It is amazing how many more calories you burn when it is windy outside and you have to run against the wind. I hope to get back on a better schedule with working out now. Until next time...

Happy St. Patty's Day!! (Totals for 17 Mar 2010)
Well I am half way through my week and I have some good numbers going. Maybe I shouldn't say that because every time I do something comes up where I can't run for the rest of the week. So I will keep my fingers crossed that that doesn't happen this week. All I can do is hope for the best and push forward. It is still pretty cold today and I felt it after doing my speed work (and I use that term loosely) when I walked outside the gym and felt that breeze. It was cold for Okinawa. I almost called Heather to come and get me BUT I decided not to cheat myself and I ran back home. Today I got in 13.32 miles and I burned 2,378 calories. Not too bad for one days work. I have to work tonight and I hope I have the energy to get in a run in the morning. I guess we will see. Until next time...

Well it was cold once again here in Okinawa but I got my workout in regardless. I head back to work tomorrow so it should warm up. It seems that every day I have off it rains and it is cold; then when I go back to work it warms up and it is typical Okinawan weather. Go figure. Anyways, I got in 10.31 miles and I burnt 1,348 calories during my workouts. Tomorrow I hope to get in some speed work. I will go for my normal walk with Heather in the morning after my base MANDATORY briefing at 0700, and then I will get my run in. I plan on running from the house to the gym, do my speed work on the treadmill for 30 minutes, and then run back to the house. I hope to get in my 10 miles that way. Well I think I need to stop making goals for myself and just work out when I can. Because every time I try to make a goal it doesn't happen. So we are trying to salvage the month and maybe, just maybe get in some good mileage to finish out the month. I can't do anything about the past so I just need to look forward and try to get better from here. I need to realize that life happens and I am not always going to get to do what I want especially during a very busy month that includes 12 hour shifts, preparing for a base exercise towards the end of the month, and every other little thing that can possibly take away from my work out time. These months happen and I need to do what I can do, when I can do it. Today I got in 10.28 miles and I burned 1,497 calories. Well I meant to run this morning but I didn't get going early enough this morning. Heather and I went for our usual walk and I felt pretty tired while we were walking. So I thought I would hold off until tonight to get it in but to tell you the truth I am beat from today and pushing myself these past couple of days. Cleaning the house moving existing furniture, and putting new furniture together really wiped me out. So I am taking the day off from running. I will get back on track tomorrow with another morning run. This morning I went 2.32 miles and burned 280 calories. Not a whole heck of a lot but at least it was some form of exercise. I need to remember to listen to my body and take the days off I need to recuperate and don't get burned out or injured. JUST RELAX.

Well another day in the books and it has been a busy one. We have been on the move since this morning which is always good on a day off from work. That means we didn't just sit on our butts in the house and do nothing. This morning I went for my run and Heather and I got in our walk. Then we went and had lunch at Gordies, a Japanese hamburger joint here on the island. Afterwards we went over to Makeman's which is kinda like a Japanese Home Depot and bought some things for the house. Once Bella got home from school we went to Torii Station, an Army base, got some Subway and headed down to the beach to watch the sunset and watch the tide come in. Once we got home, I took Blu out for a walk which is a chore all by itself because I am teaching her walk on a leash which she hates. She did a lot better than last time but she still thinks it sucks. She will love it eventually....I hope. Then after that short walk I brought her back to the house and went for my "night time relaxation walk" or at least that is what I am calling it. It was a very good day today. Hopefully more will follow and my family will spend much more time outdoors and indoors. Today I got in 11.07 miles and burned 1,752 calories. Not too bad of a day. Until next time...

Well today was my first day off and my first of trying to fit in 10 miles total. As long as I get in a good 6+ mile run and Heather and I get our walk in, making up the last little bit won't be hard at all. I will say that after this first day I feel pretty good. My run today still kills my hip flexors but it is something I will have to work through and get my legs and lower back used to running these Okinawan hills. The main theme is consistency once I get back to where I want to be. My biggest battle is with eating and I am aware of that. If I can get that under control I should be good to go. Today I got in 10.35 miles total and burned 1,462 calories. I feel good about the direction I am heading in as long as I can stay on track. JUST RUN!!

Totals for 1 Mar 2010
Well today starts a new month and a new beginning to some fitness goals. I figure that I will take things month to month instead of working for the end of the year. I have set myself a lofty goal of losing 20 lbs this month just to see if I can do it. Maybe with a little unrealistic goal I will push myself a little harder this month to see if I can accomplish it. Anyways my starting weight for this is 256 lbs. I need to lose 4.5 lbs a week to meet this goal by 31 Mar. Today I got in 8.03 miles, burned 1,308 calories and it took me 1 hr. 47 minutes to complete. Those totals include my run and Heather's and my walk. It is nice to go for a cool down walk after I get done running which helps me loosen up which is a good thing. A little something every day is what I am shooting for. Just Run.

Didn't get in a run today because of all the rain. We did get in our walk this morning which was something at least. Seen a huge dead snake in the road though. It was over 4 feet long!! It is the biggest I have seen since we arrived here. Wouldn't want to come across an alive one, that would be scary stuff. Anyways, we got in a 2.28 mile walk this morning even with all the crappy weather and the running around we had to do today. I am trying to get things together to get things going come the first of March. Just Run!

Totals for 24 & 25 Feb 2010
Well I thought this week would turn out a little different than it has. Not too much running due to a trip to the ER on Tuesday. I have hydrocele but the pains I have, have nothing to do with hydrocele. It feels more like Epididymitis. But I have killer lower back pain and it feels like I have been kicked in the boys! But they did an ultra sound and took urine samples and they said they didn't find anything. Maybe it has to do with the weight gain once again. I haven't ever felt like this before. It could be the extra weight on my back that is putting pressure on my nerves in my lower back and my junk. So I will continue to take Motrin and continue running. I feel a little better when Heather and I go for walks in the morning because it seems to loosen my back up. Then right after our walk I go for my run. Then I want to get in another walk sometime in the night on my days off. On the 24th I we went for a walk of 2.3 miles. On the 25th I did a total of 8.63 miles and that included my run and walk. I didn't get in a night time walk because I always fall asleep when I put the girls to bed. But I have to start somewhere again. I think March is going to be my "Cold Turkey" month. I have set a goal for myself to lose 20 lbs. that month. Billy said it takes 28 days to create a habit so March is going to be my habit forming month. I will keep a food log and try to get in some mileage every day. I am glad that the warm weather is finally starting to come back. Just Run.

Running Totals for 18 Feb 10
It's been a couple of days since I could run with the constant down pour outside and getting off late. So today was my first day off and I got in a pretty good workout. Since I have been a slacker for most of this year so far, I have gotten out of shape AGAIN and I need to scale back the weight lifting until I get a good running/ fitness base AGAIN. I tried to lift after my Interval run but I didn't have the energy to get into it. So after some chest and back exercises I called it a day for the lifting portion and went up stairs to the cardio room and finished with the last 35 minutes of cardio. I got in a little more running tonight because I had to calibrate my footpod for my Forerunner 405 so I can track my workouts on the treadmill through my Garmin program. It is an experiment in progress because I have to figure out the best way to calibrate it which was pretty frustrating tonight. I will get it figured out. Tonight I went for 7.28 miles, burned 1,140 calories, and it took me 78 minutes to complete. Not too bad for a FAT 35 year old. I need to get better all around. Until next time...

Well this will be quick because I have to head out to work soon. I bought me a running dog today. She is a chocolate Lab and I will post pictures of her soon. 08 Feb 10 A Day Off
I decided to take the day off today. I needed it plus my body needed it. The past couple of days I got a total of 7 hours of sleep so I needed a day to just do nothing. Plus I put Evie to bed last night and I think I was out before she was. I weighed in today at 259 lbs. Hopefully we can put a dent in that number the next couple of weeks and get in the mid to low 250's. My plan for the rest of the week is run Tues, Wed, & Thursday (my work days). Then run/lift on Friday, and Saturday. And I will always take Sunday's off from here on out no matter where they fall in my work outs. I at least need one day off during the week. Until next time...

Well I got in another hardcore work out or at least a hardcore work out for me. I think after the three days of these types of work outs I will need three days to recover. The maintenance runs should seems pretty easy......I hope. I forget that even though I cut out the weight lifting portion of my work outs I still have to deal with the hills of Okinawa on my "easy" days. Hopefully my schedule will permit me to get in a full week of work outs. I won't post weekly totals until I have a full week of work outs which seems pretty far and few between right now. But I am trying to get them in when I can. I figure I kill myself these my three days off so it should make up for the days that I don't get in a work out. For me everything comes down to the food I shove in my face and I will continue to struggle and fight that battle everyday. I just love food too much!! Tonight I got in 6.53 miles, burned 1,304 treadmill calories, and I went for 70 minutes. I need to get my BODYBUGG up and running because I am curious how much I am actually burning through out my entire work out. The number has to be up in the mid 2K range, but maybe I am shooting high. Running Totals for 6 Feb 10
Well since I haven't been able to run the past three days because of bad timing at work and the torrential downpours the last three days I figure I had better take advantage of my days off to get some hard work outs in. Tonight's work out was a good one. I got my interval run in for my first half of cardio (I will post it with the next post because this will be short because I got to get in bed. It's a little after 2am and I have to get up for church in a couple of hours), I got in a good weight lifting session ((I'm happy the soreness is gone for the most part), and I got in a nice leisurely run to finish out the session. I should have burned some good calories tonight. Plus my Lip0-6 showed up in the mail today so I am stoked about that. It gave me some hellacious heartburn tonight though. I am not sure if the Lip0-6 and my Animal Pak vitamins don't like each other. I guess time will surely tell. Plus I think I am getting a cold, my throat kinda hurts. Anyways my totals for tonight are 6.33 miles, burned 1,255 treadmill calories, and it took me 70 minutes to complete the running portion. I was at the gym for around 2 hours which is an improvement over my last visit to the gym. BE HEALTHY!! Until next time...

Running Totals for 2 Feb 10
Well today was supposed to be a run/ gym day but after yesterday's weight lifting extravaganza I decided to just run tonight. My body wasn't feeling it tonight and I thought I better ease into the weight lifting portion of my exercises. I will hit the gym again on my next day off. Hopefully three days away from the gym will give my body ample time to recover. We will see. In the mean time I will continue with my running. I am pretty sore after yesterday's workout but it is good! I can still move and that is what counts. Tonight I got in 6.4 miles, burned 845 calories (I don't know if I trust my Forerunner for calorie count but at least it is an estimate. I need to get my BODYBUGG fixed or get a new sensor) and I went for 74 minutes. Two days in a row now and I feel pretty good. It's starting out to be a good month....Until next time...

I'm taking a mulligan for January!!
Since January was less than stellar for starting out my fitness year. I am taking a mulligan for last month. If you don't know what a mulligan is, it is a do over or in my case a START RIGHT NOW!! Since I only got in 97.92 miles last month and I wanted to get 120 there is a lot of room for improvement. I also gained 2.4 lbs this past month so I am going in the wrong direction there. My starting weight for this month is 262.4 lbs. Hmmm..... Well all I can do is improve and this is the month to get started with that. This is the month to jump start this mutha and get to work and achieve my health and wellness goals. Heather and I have made a goal to not eat dinner outside of the house for this month. I know that doesn't seem like that much but trust me if we can break that one habit it will be monumental for us. I have also decided to take up weight lifting on my days off. It is only three days a week and I can handle that. I found a good full body workout from my new running book I just bought and I am excited about it. I tried it out tonight and it wiped me out but if I can get used to doing this it will be great and help me cut the weight fast.....I hope. I know what my Achilles heel is and that is my eating habits. If I can fix that then the rest should fall into place. I just need to stay motivated and focus on my goals. My new workout is as follows:

I went through it tonight and it wiped me out but I got through it just fine. I should be pretty sore tomorrow though. I should burn a ton of calories. I need to call the BODYBUGG people and see if they can fix my BODYBUGG. If not I will have to sweet talk Heather into letting me pick up another arm sensor. Well it has been a couple of days since my last run and I could come up with some excuses why I didn't run but really for me they would just be excuses. So I have to ask forgiveness for myself that I will do better from now on. I need to keep this thing going because I know what it can look like if I get off track and I will find myself back in the 280's. And nobody wants that!! It was a very nice night for running and I almost missed it. I laid down with Bella because she was having a hard time falling asleep and I fell asleep before she did. But thank goodness for curious Evie who pounced on me to wake me back up. So I got up, got ready, and hit the streets. Well since I didn't run yesterday I thought I needed to hit the streets tonight to make up for it. Since I only got in 25.24 miles last week I feel like I have cheated myself the past couple of weeks only putting in 25 miles. So I will kick it up this week and get in my 30+ miles to reach my 120 mile goal for the month. Starting Feb. 1st it is time to get serious about losing this weight and eating healthier. Running Totals for 21 Jan 10
Well today's run was the toughest run in a long time. I just didn't have any energy to run at all. I was trying to think of what is the difference of when I run in the morning and at night. And the answer is food! I don't eat before I go run in the morning and when I run at night we have dinner at least an hour before I go run. So with that said I will need to eat something in the morning before I hit the streets. I think my shoes are finished. I have to wait until we get taxes back before I can get a new pair though. We should have our taxes back by the 29th of this month, so not too much longer. Today I ran/ walked 6.22 miles (barely), burned 916 calories, and it took me an astronomical 76 minutes to complete. Running Totals for 20 Jan 10
Well I was going to get another run in tonight but I think that might be over doing it just a little bit so I will stick with my one run from this morning. It's still early in the new year running season and one run a day right now is plenty. My weight this morning was 259.4, so at least I am back in the 250's. At least until I weigh tomorrow morning. I am trying something new tomorrow. I am going to prepare all my meals for the next three days. That way I take out the guess work of what I will be eating. I think preparation will be key to staying away from the junk. This morning I got in a 6.25 mile run/walk. It was a VERY nice day today, in the low 70's. So needless to say I was dying of heat while I was running but it felt so good. I burned 1,015 calories during my run and it took me 74 minutes to complete. It was good to get outside in the sunshine and run for once. Normally I run at night so it was a nice change of pace. JUST RUN. Until next time...

Running Totals for 18 Jan 10
Well after a couple of days off due to hip flexor problems I will take this week a little more slowly than last week. It seems that my body doesn't respond well to the extra 15 lbs. I put on since my last heavy run load. So with that said I need to really pay attention to my body and WALK MORE when my body needs it. There is nothing wrong with walking and I have to get used to telling myself that. We will see how this week goes. I still plan on doing 20-30 miles this week. The mileage isn't the problem, it's how I get those miles that I leave myself open to possible injuries. And injuries mean that I can't run. Now for the serious part, my eating habits. I am about to do a serious overhaul to what I am putting in my body this week and it starts today. I am working on drinking water only from here on out. I am going for 1 gallon a day to keep my system properly flushed and hydrated. Or at least that is the majority of the fluids I will be taking in from now on. I am finding out that it isn't easy to down a gallon in a day but if I stick with it, it should get easier. No more soda!! I figure there isn't anything good that comes from it so I don't need it. I will also be eating 6 smaller meals a day and I will try to keep my calories around 2,200. I need to fix my diet RIGHT NOW!! I weighed in at 261.6 today and I am not happy about that. I will start to weigh myself everyday from here on out. Tonight I ran 6.38 miles, burned 916 calories, and I went for 70 minutes. It is time to get serious about this. Until next time...

Running Totals for 14 Jan 10
Well another very sore run is in the books. My bones are not used to running in cold weather and the last few days have been killer. It won't last forever but getting through these cold days are going to be tough. As long as I just persevere I should be fine and better for it. Not a lot going on today. Went and picked up some BSN Syntha-6 Protein & some Animal Pak Vitamins to start supplementing a little bit when I begin eating clean. Which is going to happen really soon. The week is progressing pretty well, I am feeling a little sore over the past couple of days. I cut my speed back a little bit to see if that helps with the aches and pains. I guess we will see. Today I ran 6.01, burned 816 calories, and I went for 65 minutes. I hope everyone is being consistent with their own personal workouts and getting in exercise where they can. Every little bit helps. Running Totals for 13 Jan 10
Well I had no idea that it could get into the 40's here in Okinawa. I think it was around 50° when I went for me run tonight and we had a nasty windchill factor also. Needless to say it was a pretty miserable run but I got through it. It seems like I never got warmed up and my legs ached for the whole run. You can tell that I am not acclimated to the cold weather at all! I think I might have to break down and buy some tights to run in along with an Under Armour long sleeve top if the weather is going to stay like this. Tonight I ran 6.06 miles, burned 839 calories, and it took me 68 minutes total. Chalk another one up to getting out there and getting my run in even though I didn't want too. JUST RUN! Running Totals for 12 Jan 10
I didn't get in a run this morning because we were experiencing a mini typhoon. It was a crazy morning weather wise. And I didn't get around to it before I had to go to work. So, I cut out of work to get my run in. I guess that is the joy of being in charge. Tonight it was freezing outside. I can't believe how windy, rainy, and cold it is here. I guess we have to have a few of these kind of days to remind us that it is winter here too. Anyways, I need to make this quick because I need to get back to work to do close out. I ran 6.34 miles, burned 917 calories, and it took me 60 minutes. One thing about the cold weather you run quicker to get it over with!! JUST FREEZE (while running)!! Until next time...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BILLY!!
Happy Birthday Billy!! I wish I could call and tell you that but our Vonage sucks really bad right now so this will have to do. It seems like the first day back after being off for a few days is always the hardest run for me. And that was the case this morning when I went for my so called run. It also didn't help that I decided to add in some push ups and sit ups last night. I always do too much too fast. I need to just get used to running again. It is amazing how much stamina you lose is just three weeks. I weighed in at 258.6 lbs. today. At least I am heading in the right direction once again. I hope to stay headed in that direction for the year and meet my weight loss goals. I ran/ walked 5.15 miles, burned 717 calories, I went for 56 minutes. Even though the run sucked supremely bad I still got out the door and got in a workout. Be consistent! Until next time...

Goals for 10 Jan - 16 Jan 2010
I think that posting my goals for the week on Sunday since that is when it starts will be a good habit to get into. So with that said my running goal for this week is another 30 miles. I know I will probably do more than that but that is the base I want to work with for the rest of the month. That way it will give me a good starting point for the year. I also want to pay more attention to what I am eating. I don't weigh in until tomorrow but I would be very surprised if I didn't gain a few pounds this week. My eating habits really suck!! If I want to meet my weight loss goals and pass my next PT test again in May then I need to figure this out right now instead of later on down the road. I think that beginning in February Heather and I will try the Sugar Busters deal. We would start right now but we have quite a bit of things in our home that contain extra sugar. I think we will be able to purge our home of these sugary devils and start clean come February. I truly believe that if we can keep to that promise in February that I will see a significant weight loss during that month. I guess we will see. Anyways today (my no running day) Heather, the girls, and I went for a nice walk of 2.27 miles. It was a nice change of pace to have a leisure day especially before I have to work tonight. Weekly Totals for 03 Jan - 09 Jan 2010
Well I made it through my first week back running and I didn't die! That is my first milestone of the year. Today we took a trip to the Chunami Aquarium which is always a great time except the girls were acting like turds so we came home early and they didn't get to play on the awesome playground up there. I wish them better luck next time. Today was a beautiful day. I guess the weather was making up for yesterday where it was rainy and cold. Today's weather was sunny any very warm so it made for a very comfortable run tonight. Tonight I ran 7.22 miles, burned 1,122 calories, and I went for 70 minutes. My weekly totals are as follows: I ran a total of 33.87 miles, burned 5,353 calories, and my time was 6 hours and 03 minutes. I will post what I am going to do the following week every Monday. On Monday I will also start weighing in every day and see if that will help me stay on track a little better. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and let's keep this going! Running Totals for 08 Jan 10
One more day to go for week 1 of January and I should meet my goal of 30 miles for the week. They have a good article in the January issue of Runner's World called "Your Best Year Ever" (pgs 58- 63). It has an annual training plan that I think I will stick to through out the year. It has 3 higher mileage weeks and 1 easy week of running plus some good tips. I recommend it, it has a lot of good information in my humble opinion. My run tonight was a rainy one. It pretty much drizzled on me the whole time with a couple of bouts with harder rain. And for the first time ever I could see my breathe while I was running. I think it had to do more with the humidity than it really being cold though. Tonight I ran 6.55 miles, burned 1,037 calories and I went for 65 minutes. Tomorrow I am doing the 2010 Healthy and Fine Resolutions 5K Fun Run. They are hosting a 5K a month now with some kind of incentive reward for doing so many through out the year. That should keep my motivation up to run at those events every month. I am very excited to have the whole immediate Nordell family on board to keep fit this year. I think it will be great for all of us to get a little healthier this year and keep each other motivated in doing so. I am looking forward to this year for all of us. Just Run or Just Exercise!! Running Totals for 07 Jan 10
Well after a day off from our family crisis it was good to get out on the road and not think about yesterday's events. Those are the type of days that everyone hates to go through. I really feel bad for Heather and the girls and I hope soon we can get them another dog not to replace Delilah but to help them transition into something more positive and to fill that void that they are feeling at the moment. I think a trip to the Chunami Aquarium is in order for this weekend. That is always a pick me up for our family. Tonight's run was a pretty good one. I am just getting started again so I am taking it easy and the day off yesterday was actually a relief. I have been pretty sore this week. Anyways, I ran 6.42 miles, burned 1,040 calories, and I went for 65 minutes. It will probably be a couple of weeks until I get my runner's legs once again before I start putting in a 10+ mile run every week. I am trying to break into this slowly this time that way I don't get injured in the process. JUST RUN! Until next time...

Just a quick note to post my totals for today. I ran 6.2 miles, burned 984 calories, and I went for 63 minutes. It was a pretty tough run because I took so much time off from running that it feels like I am starting over some days. Plus when I tackle the hills of Okinawa and my hip flexors do not want to work for me. Anyways, hopefully this time I will learn my lesson and stick with running consistently. JUST RUN!! Weigh In & Running Totals for 04 Jan 10
First off I want to thank Heather for the new background for my blog. I think she did a very nice job and she kept my picture at the top. Well my weight hasn't changed from the 1st of January but that was just a couple of days ago, so I am sitting at 260.2 lbs. to start off again. I don't know why I do this to myself. I lose all that weight but I don't change my eating habits. Then when I slack off with the running the weight goes back up. I am working on making this year different. This year I WILL change my eating habits and keep on track with my running and get to my goal weight AND STAY THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is going to be a great year!! Today I ran 7.5 miles, burned 1170 calories, and went for 96 minutes (that was my run & Heather and my walk today). Miles are miles, I guess. This is going to be a good transition month for getting this going once again. My goal is to break 100 miles this month. JUST RUN!! Until next time...

No Running Tonight
Well I was planning on going for a run tonight but then life happens and it looks like I will have to try tomorrow. Plus it is raining something fierce outside, Bella & I are sick so we will just chalk this one up to life throwing a curve ball. Tomorrow was supposed to be my day off from running but if things are back to normal then I will get a run in. I forgot to say that yesterday I got in a run on 5.8 miles. It was a rough run but that is to be expected after three weeks of not running. It's time to get back into the groove. I was going to start another blog to use more for a journal but I think it will be best to just use this one blog to write everything. Some of the things that I would like to accomplish this year would be:
(1) being a better father/husband & a spiritual leader for my family.
(2) being more conscientious about my health. Pay better attention to exercise and my diet.
(3) work towards my Master's degree & finish my CCAF degree.
(4) take my career more seriously!!
(5) stop living on cruise control & find my passion.
I think these are some pretty attainable goals for this year & at the beginning of each month I will try to remember to post these goals and give an update on how things are progressing. Until next time...

Happy New Year's from Okinawa!!!
Well it's time to get back on the workout horse and get back to work. Since I had pretty much taken a mini vacation in December, I think I am over due to lace up my running shoes and hit the pavement. So here we go...I weighed in at 260 lbs. to start the new year and I should be shocked by that number but I am not. I know what I have been eating and now it is time to stop and get things moving again. Dad and I have set our running total goal for the year at 1,200 miles with an OVER ACHIEVER goal of 1,500 miles. I think 1,500 is very attainable and I think that 1,200 miles would be excellent. It's not a bad thing to shoot for the stars and hit the moon, if that makes any sense what so ever. Weight goals for the year is to be around the 220 lb. mark by this day 2011 and my OVER ACHIEVER goal of 205 lbs. Once again very reachable and I will be excited to meet either of those weight goals. My next PT test is in May so I am keeping that in mind and working to better my scores in November 2009. This is going to be a GREAT year fitness wise. Be consistent is the Mantra for this year!!
